Most of the earth’s population currently resides in urban areas, and it is a well-known fact that the surrounding environment may be significantly impacted by the planning and construction of our cities.  Since the Industrial Revolution, human emissions of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, have increased. This increase is mostly attributed to the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. These gases intensify the greenhouse effect, retain heat in the atmosphere of the planet, and are quite likely the primary driver of global warming since the middle of the 20th century.
